Chandigarh, February 23, 2026: In a major welfare push aimed at strengthening food and nutrition security, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Monday announced the launch of the ‘Meri Rasoi Yojna’, under which 40 lakh families across the state will receive free quarterly ration kits beginning April.
Unveiling the scheme, the Chief Minister said the initiative will supplement the wheat already being distributed to beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
He termed the move a “moral responsibility” of the government to ensure nutritious food reaches every household, particularly economically weaker sections.
What Will Each Kit Contain?
Under the scheme, every eligible family will receive:
- 2 kg moong–chana dal (lentils)
- 2 kg sugar
- 1 kg iodized salt
- 200 grams turmeric powder
- 1 litre mustard oil
These items will be provided in addition to the wheat supplied under NFSA.
The Chief Minister said that while Punjab has historically played a key role in ensuring national food security, certain families within the state still struggle with access to balanced meals. “This initiative reflects our commitment to ensure that no family in Punjab sleeps hungry,” he said.
Markfed to Oversee Distribution
The Chief Minister informed that Markfed will act as the nodal agency for the implementation of the scheme. The Food and Civil Supplies Department will ensure free distribution, backed by a structured mechanism to maintain transparency and efficiency. Strict quality checks will be enforced, and complaints regarding irregularities will invite prompt action.
Focus on Nutrition and Welfare
Emphasising the larger impact of the scheme, Mann said the initiative would significantly improve nutrition levels among children and vulnerable families. He reiterated that the upcoming state Budget would further expand people-centric welfare measures while safeguarding the interests of every section of society.
Meanwhile, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema stated that lakhs of poor and Dalit families are expected to benefit substantially from the scheme, calling it a historic step towards inclusive development.
The distribution of food kits is scheduled to begin in April, marking one of the largest food security interventions undertaken by the state government in recent years.
