Chandigarh, February 23, 2026: Punjab’s industrial landscape is set for a major transformation as the ₹3,200 crore Tata Steel manufacturing plant in Ludhiana begins operations from March, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann announced on Monday.
Describing the project as a milestone for the state’s industrial resurgence, the Chief Minister said the mega investment reflects growing confidence among leading global corporations in Punjab’s progressive policies and stable governance framework.
Second Largest Tata Steel Plant in India
The facility, being set up by Tata Steel near HiTech Valley in Ludhiana, will be the company’s second largest plant in India after its iconic Jamshedpur unit.
Spread across 115 acres, the project will have a capacity of 0.75 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) and will operate through an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF)-based steelmaking process along with a rebar mill. Initially proposed with an investment of ₹2,600 crore, the project outlay has now increased to ₹3,200 crore.
The plant is expected to generate direct and indirect employment for nearly 2,500 people, significantly strengthening Ludhiana’s industrial ecosystem. Senior representatives from Tata Steel, including Vice President (Long Products) Ashish Anupam, met the Chief Minister to review the project’s progress.
CM Mann highlighted that the unit will utilise 100 percent steel scrap as raw material, adopting a more sustainable and environmentally responsible production model.
Push for Green Industrialisation
Emphasising the environmental benefits, the Chief Minister noted that the Electric Arc Furnace route substantially reduces carbon emissions compared to traditional blast furnace technology.
“This reflects Punjab’s commitment to green and sustainable industrial development,” he said, adding that the state government ensured time-bound execution of the project through proactive facilitation and industry-friendly policies.
Calling it a matter of pride, CM Mann said the Ludhiana plant represents Tata Steel’s largest investment in Punjab and signals the state’s emergence as a preferred destination for industrial expansion.
Cabinet Minister Sanjeev Arora, Chief Secretary KAP Sinha, and senior officials were also present during the interaction.
