Massive 7.8 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Philippines; 5 Killed as Tsunami Warnings Issued Across Southeast Asia
7.8 magnitude earthquake strikes Mindanao region in Southern Philippines, collapsing buildings in Sarangani.
Tsunami warnings triggered for coastal areas of the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
Tremors felt a day after separate earthquakes shook parts of India, China, and Bhutan.
Manila, 8 june 2026- A powerful and devastating earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck the Philippines morning, leaving a trail of destruction. According to initial reports, a building collapsed in the Sarangani province due to the violent tremors, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least five people.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake struck at 7:37 AM local time, heavily impacting the Mindanao region of the Southern Philippines. The epicenter of the quake was monitored at a depth of 35 kilometers, located approximately 24.7 kilometers west-southwest of Burias, Philippines.
Tsunami Warnings Issued Across Three Countries
Given the massive intensity of the earthquake, disaster management agencies in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia have issued urgent tsunami warnings for the next few hours. Experts fear that waves exceeding one meter could hit the shores, potentially causing severe damage to coastal infrastructure.
Local authorities have ordered residents living in vulnerable coastal zones to immediately evacuate to safer, higher ground. Emergency agencies are continuously monitoring the sea levels and assessing the ongoing threat. Meanwhile, structural damage to numerous residential properties has already been reported across the impacted zone.
Evacuation Orders Extended to Indonesia
Indonesia's geophysics agency has similarly raised a tsunami alert for the country's northeastern coastal territories. Residents in these areas have been advised to remain highly vigilant and strictly adhere to official government protocols.
The Philippines is globally recognized as one of the most disaster-prone nations regarding seismic activity. The archipelago is situated along the Pacific 'Ring of Fire', a major basin in the Pacific Ocean where a vast majority of the world's earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.
Seismic Activity Follows Quakes in India, China, and Bhutan
This major catastrophe comes just a day after strong tremors jolted parts of India, China, and Bhutan. Those earthquakes registered magnitudes ranging between 5.3 and 5.7 on the Richter scale. While the epicenter of that cluster was located in Bhutan, significant tremors were felt across Indian states including Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, and parts of Sikkim. Although no casualties or major property damage were reported in those regions, the successive events have triggered widespread panic, prompting monitoring agencies to advise high alertness.
