Amritsar, June 29, 2026: In this history of modern Punjab, for first time Sikh MLAs of the State Assembly will depose before Akal Takht Sahib.
After Independence Punjab had 154 MLAs before re-organisation in 1966. At that time undivided state also had Legislative Council. After re-organisation of 1966, number of MLAs in Punjab Assembly was fixed at 117.
Though Akal Takht Secretariat has not issued any figure on how many MLAs have been summoned today but it had said that Sikh MLAs have been summoned.
Since Independence it is first time that MLAs have been summoned to seek explanation on a legislative matter. Though there is no past incidence when Akal Takht Sahib had objected to any law before but in case of Jagaat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Act Akal Takht Sahib has objected to certain clauses of the Act. Though State Assembly works as per Constitution of India, but in case of Punjab specially in case of Sikh issues, Supremacy of Sri Akal Takht Sahib has always been maintained. Spiritually, socially and even politically, Sikh masses have always bowed before Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
Whether Punjab Government amends the act per direction of Sri Akal Takht Sahib in future, it remains to be seen.
