Mansa (Punjab), July 3, 2026: In a tragic incident, a 36-year-old woman allegedly poisoned and killed her three children before dying by suicide at her rented home in Punjab's Mansa district, police said on Friday.
According to the police, the deceased, identified as Sandeep Kaur, had been living in a rented house with her mother-in-law and her three children after the death of her husband, who had succumbed to an illness. She reportedly worked as a daily-wage labourer to support the family.
Officials from the City-2 police station rushed to the scene after receiving information about the incident and initiated an investigation.
Kulwant Singh, Investigation Officer at City-2 police station, said that the preliminary investigation indicates that Sandeep Kaur first administered poison to her children and then allegedly strangled them to death before hanging herself from a ceiling fan in her room.
The deceased children have been identified as Moto Kaur (13), Kalu (8), and Vishwas (1½).
According to relatives, Sandeep Kaur had been under severe mental stress for some time. Police said the family had been facing acute financial hardship following the death of her husband, making it increasingly difficult to meet household expenses.
The bodies of all four deceased have been sent for postmortem examination. Police have registered a case and are continuing the investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the incident.
