Chandigarh, July 5, 2026:Punjab Congress’s internal discord has intensified after senior party leader Mohammed Mustafa, husband of former Punjab minister Razia Sultana, wrote a strongly worded open letter to Rahul Gandhi, urging immediate corrective action within the state unit.
In the letter, Mustafa called for Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring to resign and advised the party high command to take firm decisions to prevent further damage ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
Describing the developments within the Punjab Congress over the past six months as a “theatre of the absurd,” Mustafa blamed the party leadership’s indecisiveness for the recent political turmoil, particularly the events in Morinda. He argued that the high command’s inability to act decisively had emboldened certain leaders who joined the Congress in 2012 and were now challenging the very organisation that had given them political prominence.
In his letter, Mustafa asserted that Punjab’s political culture values courage and decisive leadership, while indecision and hesitation are viewed as signs of weakness.
Launching a direct attack on the current state leadership, Mustafa alleged that Raja Warring, because of what he described as his political inexperience and the influence of his chief adviser Sandeep Sandhu, had alienated a significant section of the party’s senior leadership.
He suggested that, in order to strengthen Rahul Gandhi’s leadership and restore discipline within the party, Raja Warring should immediately step down as Punjab Congress chief and leave the final decision regarding the state unit to the Congress high command.
Mustafa further urged the party leadership to appoint the next Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president solely on merit rather than as a compromise to appease different factions. He said Punjab requires a leader capable of taking on the ruling government with confidence and credibility, adding that the party should entrust leadership to a clean and strong-faced leader from any major community instead of promoting loyalists.
Warning that the Morinda episode was only the beginning, Mustafa cautioned that unless immediate and strict action is taken, similar pressure tactics could emerge ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections over the projection of the party’s chief ministerial face.
Concluding his letter with a direct appeal to Rahul Gandhi, Mustafa wrote, “Do not be afraid. Take the right decision and then wield the stick.” He stressed that the time for decisive action had arrived and warned that any further delay could prove costly for the Congress in Punjab.
