Gurdaspur (Punjab), July 6, 2026: Torrential rain that lashed Gurdaspur from midnight led to widespread waterlogging across the city on Monday, inundating roads, streets and several residential areas, while also bringing much-needed relief from the recent spell of intense heat.
The heavy downpour caused water to accumulate on major roads, disrupting normal movement. Several key stretches, including Geeta Bhawan Road, Hanuman Chowk, Sadar Bazaar, Sangalpura Road, Tibri Road, Jail Road and College Road, remained submerged for hours.
The situation was more severe in low-lying localities, where rainwater entered several houses. Residents of Qadri Mohalla, Islamabad Mohalla and Secretary Mohalla reported flooding inside their homes, resulting in damage to household belongings and food supplies.
Locals also expressed concern over the city's inadequate drainage system, alleging that the main drainage canal has not been cleaned ahead of the monsoon season. They said the lack of desilting has slowed the discharge of rainwater, worsening waterlogging in several parts of the city.
While the rainfall brought a noticeable drop in temperature and respite from the prevailing humid conditions, it also exposed deficiencies in the city's drainage infrastructure, leaving residents in affected areas struggling with flooding and property damage.
