Chandigarh, July 10, 2026: Thousands of farmers from across Punjab on Friday staged a massive protest in Chandigarh on the call of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), leading to traffic disruptions and heightened security across key parts of the city.
The protest was led by Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Joginder Singh Ugrahan, with large numbers of farmers assembling at the Exhibition Ground in Sector 34 before marching towards Matka Chowk in Sector 17.
The procession, comprising buses, tractor-trolleys and other vehicles, resulted in severe traffic congestion on several major roads, causing inconvenience to commuters.
Anticipating the large gathering, the Chandigarh Police deployed a heavy security contingent and erected barricades around Matka Chowk to prevent protesters from advancing further.
During the march, several young farmers were seen climbing onto the roofs of buses, waving flags and raising slogans against the Centre and the Punjab government.
The protest remained peaceful under tight police vigil, though traffic movement in several parts of Chandigarh was significantly affected due to the large turnout of demonstrators.
