Fish Market Relocation Gets Boost as Chairman Tejinder Mehta Steps In

Patiala, July 22, 2026 : District Planning Committee Patiala Chairman Tejinder Mehta has intervened in the issue of fish markets operating at different locations across the city by writing to the Municipal Corporation Commissioner and the Deputy Commissioner, Patiala. In his letter, he has called for the necessary legal and administrative action to shift all fish markets functioning within the city to the new Fish Market established by the Punjab Government at village Ghalori. He said the move would not only make the new Fish Market fully functional in line with its intended purpose but would also improve sanitation, public health, traffic management and overall urban order in the city.
In the letter, Mehta said that the actions taken by various government departments, the directions issued and interactions with shop allottees indicate that the Fish Market established by the Government in the larger public interest has yet to become fully operational. He pointed out that licensees who purchased shops in the new market have repeatedly raised the issue that unless all fish markets operating across the city are shifted to the new market, customer footfall there will not develop naturally and they will not receive a reasonable return on their investment.
It is pertinent to mention that at a meeting chaired by the Municipal Corporation Commissioner on June 11, 2026, officials of the Municipal Corporation, Punjab Mandi Board, Fisheries Department and the Market Committee had decided that fish vendors operating from different parts of the city should be shifted to the new Fish Market in accordance with the allotment conditions and legal provisions. It is also noteworthy that the District Mandi Officer has already issued directions in this regard, while the Market Committee has served individual notices to the shop allottees.
In his letter, Chairman Mehta has urged the authorities to effectively implement the decisions taken at the June 11 meeting by ensuring coordination among the Municipal Corporation, Punjab Mandi Board, Market Committee, Fisheries Department and other concerned departments, besides taking the required legal action. He has also stressed the need for government departments, institutions and organisations on whose land or premises fish trade is being carried out to take action within their respective jurisdictions and issue necessary directions to stop such business outside the new Fish Market.
