Chandigarh, July 27, 2026: Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj has stated that yoga should not be practised inside gurdwaras, saying such activities are inconsistent with Sikh religious traditions and the sanctity of Guru Ghars.
In a message to the Sikh community, the Jathedar said gurdwaras are sacred places dedicated to Gurbani, Naam Simran and the teachings of the Sikh Gurus. He emphasised that performing yoga asanas or other similar physical exercises within gurdwara premises amounts to a violation of Sikh Maryada (religious code of conduct).
He clarified that individuals who wish to practise yoga are free to do so at their homes or at designated venues, but the sanctity and religious decorum of gurdwaras must be preserved at all times.
“Gurdwaras are not meant for physical exercise or yoga sessions. Their primary purpose is to enable devotees to listen to Gurbani Kirtan, engage in Naam Simran and attain spiritual peace,” the Jathedar said.
Appealing to the Sikh Sangat, Giani Gargaj urged devotees to respect the religious code of conduct and refrain from activities that do not align with Sikh traditions and Rehat Maryada. He stressed that preserving the sanctity of Guru Ghars remains the highest priority for the Sikh community and that any violation of their religious decorum cannot be accepted.
Reiterating the spiritual purpose of gurdwaras, the Jathedar said these sacred institutions exist to connect people with Gurbani and inspire them towards spiritual growth. He called upon all devotees to honour the dignity of Guru Ghars and uphold their sanctity at all times.
