Himachal: Father allegedly throws 6-year-old son into raging Ravi river after dispute with wife

Chamba (Himachal Pradesh), August 12, 2026: A six-year-old boy is feared missing after his father allegedly threw him into the swollen Ravi River following an argument with his wife in Chamba, Himachal Pradesh.
According to the police, the accused, identified as 30-year-old Hitesh Kumar, son of Jaipal and a resident of Dabhun village under Kiyani post office, allegedly threw his son into the river on Monday night after a heated conversation with his wife over the phone.
The child’s mother has reportedly been staying at her parental home in Amritsar for around a month. The exact reason behind the argument between the couple has not yet been disclosed, and police have seized the woman’s phone as part of the investigation.
After allegedly throwing the child into the river, Hitesh himself contacted the police helpline number 112 on Tuesday morning and informed them about the incident. Police subsequently arrested him.
Following the information, a police team led by Chamba ASP Dinesh Sharma rushed to the spot. Police personnel, local residents and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have launched a search operation along and in the Ravi River to locate the missing child.
Chamba Superintendent of Police Vijay Saklani said the search for the child is continuing and that police are gathering information related to the incident as part of the investigation.
The circumstances leading up to the incident, including the nature of the dispute between the couple and the exact sequence of events, are being investigated by the police.
