Punjab BJP delegation meets Governor Kataria, seeks CBI probe into Gulzar Singh death, police custody case
Kewal Singh Dhillon-led delegation submits memorandum, demands independent investigation into two Sangrur cases

Chandigarh, September 8, 2026: A delegation of the Punjab unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by state president Kewal Singh Dhillon, met the Governor of Punjab on Tuesday and submitted a memorandum seeking an independent investigation into two incidents from Sangrur.
The BJP delegation raised the death of Gulzar Singh, a resident of Toor Banjara village, as well as allegations of custodial assault involving Mohanjit Singh. The party urged the Governor to intervene and seek a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into both matters.
According to Dhillon, Gulzar Singh had publicly raised concerns over the alleged open sale of drugs, commonly referred to as ‘chitta’, in his locality during a public meeting of the state Finance Minister. The BJP leader said Gulzar Singh had also spoken about the difficulties faced by his family due to his son’s alleged drug addiction.
The BJP further claimed that a video recorded by Gulzar Singh before his death contained allegations against the Finance Minister and other individuals. On this basis, the party argued that the incident should not be treated solely as a suicide case without thoroughly examining the allegations contained in the video.
The delegation called for a CBI inquiry into Gulzar Singh’s death and demanded that relevant evidence, including video recordings, communications and statements of family members, be preserved as part of the investigation.
BJP Raises Allegations of Custodial Assault
The delegation also brought the case of Mohanjit Singh before the Governor. The BJP alleged that Singh was detained after raising objections to the Punjab government’s handling of the drug issue during Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s visit to Sangrur.
The party claimed that Singh subsequently alleged physical assault and torture while in police custody and had to receive medical treatment at a hospital.
The BJP demanded that an FIR be registered against officials and police personnel found responsible for removing Singh from the protest site or for any alleged assault or custodial abuse.
It also sought preservation of medical records, CCTV footage, police station documents, duty rosters, official communications and other records connected with Singh’s detention.
Dhillon Seeks Governor’s Intervention
Kewal Singh Dhillon said the two Sangrur incidents raised serious concerns relating to constitutional rights, police accountability and the functioning of the state administration.
He appealed to the Governor to intervene and ensure an impartial investigation into both cases. The BJP maintained that a CBI inquiry would help establish accountability and ensure that the allegations are examined independently.
The allegations raised by the BJP are subject to investigation and legal proceedings, and responsibility for any wrongdoing will have to be established by the competent authorities.
