CJI Surya Kant: Treat drug abuse among children as a child protection issue

Patna (Bihar), September 26, 2026: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has called for treating drug abuse among children not only as a public health concern but also as a child protection issue, stressing the need for early intervention, rehabilitation and social reintegration.
He was speaking at a seminar in Patna on “Restoring Childhood – Preventing Drug Abuse and Re-integration of Children in Need of Care and Protection.”
Justice Surya Kant said children affected by substance use must be provided safety, treatment, counselling, rehabilitation and opportunities to return to education and family life.
He emphasised the importance of identifying children at risk at an early stage, saying families, schools, teachers, healthcare professionals and community workers can play a key role in recognising signs of vulnerability before they develop into a crisis.
The Chief Justice also highlighted educational continuity, safe family environments and aftercare as important components of rehabilitation.
He said reintegration should go beyond simply returning a child to a home or school. It should involve restoring the child’s place in family, education and community life, while ensuring that the child is not subjected to stigma.
Justice Surya Kant stressed that a comprehensive approach involving prevention, treatment and long-term support is essential to help children affected by substance abuse rebuild their lives.
