In a proactive move to address the environmental and health challenges posed by paddy straw burning, the Fazilka District Administration has initiated a comprehensive village-level awareness campaign.
This initiative aligns with the directives of the Punjab Government, aiming to curb the widespread practice of stubble burning, which significantly contributes to air pollution and soil degradation.
On September 29, 2026, Deputy Commissioner Ms. Amarpreet Kaur Sandhu inaugurated the campaign by flagging off two specially designed publicity vans from the District Administrative Complex. These vans are set to traverse every village within the district over a span of 40 days.
The campaign's goal is to educate farmers about the detrimental effects of burning paddy straw and to promote sustainable alternatives for its management.
Ms. Amarpreet Kaur Sandhu emphasized the campaign's focus on raising awareness about the environmental hazards and health risks associated with stubble burning. She highlighted that such practices not only degrade soil fertility but also pose significant health risks to humans due to air pollution.
The initiative seeks to inform farmers about legal repercussions and penalties linked to stubble burning, encouraging them to adopt more eco-friendly practices.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Dr. Mandeep Kaur, who was present at the launch, reiterated the administration's commitment to reaching out to the farming community at the grassroots level.
The campaign is designed to equip farmers with knowledge and resources for effective stubble management, thereby fostering environmental protection and promoting a cleaner atmosphere.
The Deputy Commissioner appealed to farmers across the district to desist from setting paddy straw ablaze. Instead, she urged them to explore and implement sustainable management techniques that can enhance soil productivity while minimizing environmental impact.
This initiative marks a significant step towards sustainable agricultural practices in Fazilka, setting a precedent for other districts in Punjab to follow.
