SBSSU hosts national seminar on millets for health, nutrition and sustainability
Ferozepur, October 1, 2026: The Department of Agriculture at Shaheed Bhagat Singh State University (SBSSU), Ferozepur, organised a National Seminar on “Millets for Health, Nutrition and Sustainability” to promote awareness about the nutritional, ecological and agricultural importance of millets.
The seminar was organised under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Suresh Kumar Sharma and sponsored by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India, in collaboration with EIACP Punjab and the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, Chandigarh.
Inaugurating the seminar, Prof. Suresh Kumar Sharma highlighted the role of millets in strengthening nutritional security, promoting climate-resilient agriculture and supporting environmental conservation.

Earlier, Seminar Coordinator and Head of the Department of Agriculture, Dr. Balpreet Kaur, welcomed more than 250 participants, including faculty members, researchers, students and local community members.
The technical sessions featured expert lectures by Dr. Jasmeen Chahal Sidhu of GGS Medical College & Hospital, Faridkot, who spoke about the role of millets in digestive health, and Dr. Kamna Bhatti of AIIMS Bathinda, who discussed incorporating millets into daily clinical and household nutrition.
A student poster competition was also organised and judged by experts from KVK Ferozepur. Local Self-Help Groups showcased millet-based products and organic entrepreneurship initiatives, highlighting opportunities for sustainable livelihoods.
As part of the environmental component of the seminar, a tree plantation drive was held on the university campus, followed by an environmental protection pledge promoting sustainable living practices.
The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks by Registrar Dr. Rajiv Arora, who appreciated the organisers, resource persons and participants for their contribution towards promoting sustainable food systems and greater awareness about millets.
