Chandigarh, October 8, 2026: Senior Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira on Thursday questioned the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association's decision to issue a statement condemning his alleged remarks against Law Officers in the Office of the Advocate General, Punjab.
Khaira said he had learnt that the Bar Association had issued the statement based on a representation by the Law Officers without giving him an opportunity to present his side.
He described the complaint as politically motivated and alleged that the Law Officers in the Advocate General's Office were employees of the Punjab government.
Khaira also alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party government was using the complaint as part of what he described as a political vendetta against him. He referred to cases registered against him and claimed that he had been implicated in "vendetta cases".
He further alleged that despite having a large number of Law Officers in the Advocate General's Office, the Punjab government engages expensive private lawyers to handle litigation in the High Court and Supreme Court, putting an additional burden on the public exchequer.
Khaira also questioned the absence of private practising lawyers among those who had submitted the representation, saying it raised questions about the nature of the complaint.
He urged the HCBA president to withdraw the statement and said the Bar Association should not get involved in what he described as the political conflict between the ruling AAP government and opposition parties.
