Ferozepur bans sale, storage and use of Chinese kite string
Ferozepur, October 13, 2026: A complete ban on the sale, storage and use of nylon, synthetic and plastic kite string, commonly known as Chinese dor, has been imposed by Additional District Magistrate Dr Amandeep Kaur, exercising powers under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 and these orders will remain in force for two months from the date of issuance.
The ban has been imposed in view of the serious threat posed by the hazardous string to human beings, birds and the environment. The synthetic string is extremely strong, non-biodegradable and difficult to break, and can cause deep cuts to the hands and fingers of kite flyers. It can also prove fatal for cyclists and scooter riders, particularly by causing injuries to the neck, face and ears, besides entangling and killing birds.
The dangers of Chinese dor have also been highlighted during Basant celebrations in Ferozepur. According to a recent report, two persons sustained injuries due to Chinese thread during the 2026 Basant season, while the continued recovery of banned synthetic spools has remained a concern despite enforcement efforts. the Ferozepur police have seized 354 spools of banned "Chinese manjha" in two separate operations. The crackdown is part of a district-wide effort to prevent the fatal injuries frequently caused by the glass-coated thread during the kite-flying season.
The administration has also stressed that the hazardous thread is not merely a kite-flying safety issue but poses a wider environmental threat. A district-wide campaign has previously urged residents to replace Chinese dor with traditional cotton thread and ensure that festive celebrations do not endanger human lives or birds.
Local NGOs including the recently formed Lok Lehar under the patronage of Gurnam Singh Gama and Advocate Rohit Arora, also strongly condemned the sale and use of Chinese thread during the coming Basant Festival and sought cooperation from the public.
