Aotea Square in the heart of Auckland, New Zealand will witness a riot of colourful turbans on Sunday, 21st April when two local Sikh organisations celebrate ‘Turban Day’ .
Over 300 people from all walks of Kiwi society are expected to participate in this special event organised jointly by the Sikh Youth New Zealand and the Khalsa Foundation NZ.
This event will provide an opportunity for Kiwis (and other ethnic groups) to know more about the Sikh culture, religious beliefs and the significance of a turban for a Sikh.
This campaign is expected to create more awareness and reduce discrimination, if any, against Sikhs -especially children in school, because of their wearing the turban.
Volunteers will be available to tie turbans on those who are willing, and nearly 400 new turbans have been purchased or received in donation for this big day.
This event is being held for the second time in New Zealand, the first one was in 2016. It is also similar to the one held in several countries across the world, including the one on April 7 at New York where the ‘Sikhs of New York’, a non-profit organisation achieved the Guinness World Record for the “most turbans tied in 8 hours.”
