PAU Experts discuss economic benefits of mushroom cultivation

Ludhiana, March 29, 2023: The Department of Microbiology, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), organized a three-day training course on “Self-employment and Income Generation Through Mushroom, Bio-Fertilizers, and Natural Vinegar Production” at Payal, Ludhiana under RKVY SCSP scheme. A total of 40 trainees attended this training program.
Dr. Ajmer Singh Dhatt, Director of Research, and Dr. Shammi Kapoor, Dean, the College of Basic Sciences and Humanities, lauded the efforts of the department which provided the trainees with brewed vinegar bottles, vinegar inoculums, ready-to-harvest mushroom compost bags, water and food testing kits, registration kit, and two consortium biofertilizer packets.
Dr. Gurvinder Singh Kocher, Head, of the Department of Microbiology, while highlighting the economic benefits of mushroom cultivation as a subsidiary occupation, told that it required less investment as well as limited space.
The University has evolved technologies for the milky, button, dhingri, Shiitake and paddy straw mushrooms and their large-scale adoption have scaled up the graph of mushroom production in Punjab in addition to augmenting farmers’ income.
