Gurdaspur (Punjab), September 11, 2025: The flood situation in Punjab remains critical, prompting the district administration of Gurdaspur to extend holidays in 73 schools till September 15. The decision was taken as floodwater has not yet receded from the premises of several schools, and many buildings are unsafe for students.
Out of these, 61 are elementary schools and 12 are senior secondary schools, most of them located along the Ravi river. The Punjab government had earlier announced the reopening of schools from September 8 and directed staff to ensure thorough cleaning of premises.
However, the affected schools in Gurdaspur continue to remain waterlogged or structurally damaged, making it unsafe to resume classes.
Initially, these schools were scheduled to reopen on September 11, but after reviewing the ground situation, the administration extended the holidays until September 15. Authorities stated that once water recedes fully and necessary repairs are completed, academic activities will resume without delay.
