LPU Violence Case: High Court seeks status report from Punjab Govt

Chandigarh, September 30, 2026: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has sought a status report from the Punjab government on the investigation into the violence, vandalism, alleged looting and arson at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara.
A Bench headed by the Chief Justice heard a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by a university student and fixed October 8 for the next hearing.
The petitioner has sought an independent and impartial investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The petitioner’s counsel, Gaurav Chopra and Advocate Arjun Sheoran, submitted that the violence on the campus involved arson, extensive vandalism and alleged looting, warranting judicial oversight of the investigation.
Tension had reportedly escalated on September 26 and 27 following a rumour about the alleged rape of a female student. Incidents of vandalism and arson were reported at shops in the university area, while the Delhi-Amritsar National Highway was affected for around 18 hours.
Police have said that the alleged rape could not be confirmed and an SIT has been constituted to investigate the matter.
Amid the tension, the university postponed classes and examinations for 10 days from September 28.
