Harbhajan Halwarvi’s literacy legacy returns to SCD Govt College, Ludhiana

Ludhiana (Punjab), September 19, 2026: The literary legacy of noted Punjabi poet, thinker, critic and journalist Harbhajan Singh Halwarvi has returned to his alma mater, SCD Government College, Ludhiana, with his family presenting two of his significant works to the institution.
The books, ‘Niji Khat’ and ‘Bodhikta De Pasaar’, were presented to the college’s Alumni Authored Books Shelves by Halwarvi’s family through his younger brother and fellow alumnus, historian Dr Navtej Singh Halwarvi. The initiative was facilitated by the college’s Alumni Association.
Halwarvi had studied M.Sc. Mathematics at SCD Government College before pursuing postgraduate studies in Punjabi. He later entered journalism and went on to serve as the editor of the Punjabi Tribune. His work as a poet, writer, critic, thinker and journalist made a significant contribution to modern Punjabi literary and intellectual life.
College Principal Gursharanjit Singh Sandhu described the books as a valuable addition to the institution’s collection and thanked the Halwarvi family and Alumni Association for the contribution. He said such efforts strengthen the college’s intellectual heritage and help connect current students with distinguished alumni.
Brij Bhushan Goyal, Organisation Secretary of the Alumni Association, said Niji Khat offered an important insight into the intellectual, personal and social environment of Halwarvi’s time. The collection includes correspondence between Halwarvi and scholars, writers and other prominent personalities, along with editorials written during his tenure at the Punjabi Tribune and other newspapers.
Goyal said Bodhikta De Pasaar showcased another dimension of Halwarvi’s intellectual contribution, bringing together his writings on poetry, songs, ghazals, travel, Punjabi literary personalities, books, interviews, contemporary figures and social issues.
He particularly acknowledged Dr Navtej Singh Halwarvi for preserving and editing the material, describing the effort as a contribution towards safeguarding Punjab’s literary and intellectual heritage.
The event was attended by members of the Alumni Association, including Navdeep Singh, former Director, FM Gold, All India Radio; Prof P. D. Gupta; retired DGM K. B. Singh; Prof Geetanjli Pabreja; Prof Nidhi Sharma; Prof Ira; Prof Mukesh Kumar; Ashok Dheer; Dalbir Singh Mauli; Prof Rashmi; Dr Poonam Sapra; and Prof Lakhwinder.
In a message, Prof P. K. Sharma said the presentation was more than an addition to the college library shelves, as it marked the return of an alumnus’s intellectual legacy to the institution where his academic journey had begun. He said the material would now be accessible to students, teachers, researchers and future generations.
