New Delhi, August 17, 2026: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday appointed former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sandeep Pathak as a National Secretary as part of the party’s new central organisational team announced by BJP president Nitin Nabin.
Pathak’s appointment is significant as he had been a prominent organisational strategist for the AAP before switching to the BJP earlier this year.
Pathak joined the BJP in April 2026, along with a group of AAP Rajya Sabha MPs. He had entered the Rajya Sabha in 2022 as an AAP nominee from Punjab and had earlier served as the party’s National General Secretary (Organisation).

Before becoming a full-time politician, Pathak had an academic career. He was an associate professor at IIT Delhi, where his research focused on photovoltaic cells. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge and had also worked as a research associate at institutions including the University of Oxford and MIT.
Pathak rose to prominence within the AAP for his behind-the-scenes organisational work, particularly in Punjab. He was credited with helping build the party’s grassroots organisation and formulate its election strategy ahead of the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, in which the AAP secured a sweeping victory.
He was subsequently given key organisational responsibilities within the AAP, including overseeing the party’s work in Gujarat and serving as co-incharge for Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
