Big Bust in Ludhiana Jail: Warden caught smuggling tobacco in socks, arrested red-handed

Ludhiana (Punjab), June 5, 2025: In a shocking breach of prison protocol, a warden at Ludhiana Central Jail was caught red-handed attempting to smuggle tobacco into the prison — hidden inside his socks.
The accused, identified as Gurpreet Singh, a resident of Singhewala in Fazilka district, was caught during a late-night security check.
According to police officials, he had taped multiple packets of tobacco to his feet and tried to bypass detection by wearing socks over them.However, jail staff grew suspicious and searched him thoroughly, leading to the startling discovery.
Tobacco fetches Rs 500 per packet in Jail
Police sources revealed that tobacco is in high demand within the prison, often selling at inflated prices of up to ₹500 per packet.
This has raised concerns that Gurpreet Singh may have been involved in smuggling for an extended period, possibly as part of a larger internal supply network within the jail.
FIR Registered Under Jail Act Provisions
Following a formal complaint by Assistant Jail Superintendent Surjit Singh, an FIR has been lodged at Police Station Division No. 7 under Sections 42, 45, and 52-A of the Jail Act.Investigating officers are now probing Gurpreet's past activities and looking into any possible links or accomplices inside and outside the prison.
