In a significant move aimed at ensuring a transparent and inclusive electoral process, the Punjab State Election Commission (SEC) has commenced the revision of electoral rolls in preparation for the forthcoming general and bye-elections. These elections pertain to 9 municipal corporations and 104 municipal councils across the state, marking a critical step in strengthening grassroots democracy.
The revision of electoral rolls is a standard yet crucial process undertaken to ensure that all eligible voters are included and any discrepancies are rectified. This process involves updating the voter lists by adding new voters, removing names of deceased or ineligible individuals, and correcting errors such as misspellings or incorrect details. By doing so, the SEC aims to provide an accurate and comprehensive voter database for the elections.
The municipal corporations and councils set to undergo elections play a pivotal role in local governance, managing essential services such as water supply, waste management, sanitation, and urban development. As such, these elections are vital for empowering local communities and enabling citizens to have a direct say in the administration of their towns and cities.
State Election Commissioner (SEC) Mr. Raj Kamal Chowdary has called upon all eligible voters to take an active role in the ongoing electoral roll revision process. During an interaction with APS, a representative of Babushahi Networks, he highlighted the importance of civic participation in strengthening the democratic framework.
He encouraged citizens to utilize this opportunity to verify their names on the electoral rolls, submit applications for inclusion if they are not yet registered, and report any discrepancies or errors that may require correction.
To make the process more inclusive and seamless, special arrangements are being made to accommodate everyone, with a specific focus on assisting women, senior citizens, and individuals with disabilities. These measures aim to ensure that every eligible individual has an equal opportunity to participate in the democratic process.
The revision process is expected to be conducted in a time-bound manner to ensure that the updated rolls are finalized well before the election dates are announced. To facilitate public participation, the SEC plans to set up voter assistance centers and deploy teams of officials to address queries and grievances related to the electoral rolls.
In addition to updating voter lists, the SEC is also focusing on creating awareness about the importance of voting in municipal elections. Public campaigns and outreach programs will be organized to encourage voter turnout and educate citizens about their rights and responsibilities as voters.
The upcoming elections are expected to witness keen competition among political parties and independent candidates vying for positions in municipal bodies. These elections will not only shape local governance but also serve as an indicator of public sentiment ahead of larger state or national elections.
Gian Chand Bansal, Convenor of Swaraj Abhiyan Bathinda, and Paramjeet Singh Kot Fatta, Chairman of the Primary Cooperative Agriculture Development Bank Bathinda, expressed their support for the State Election Commission’s initiative to update the electoral rolls.
They emphasized that as Punjab gears up for these pivotal elections, the proactive steps taken by the SEC reflect its dedication to maintaining democratic principles and ensuring that the elections are conducted in a transparent, equitable, and inclusive manner.
They further urged citizens to participate actively in this process by verifying their information and exercising their right to vote, thereby contributing meaningfully to the vibrant democratic framework of the state.
