New Delhi, April 17, 2026: Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while speaking in the Lok Sabha during the debate on the Women’s Reservation Bill and the Delimitation Bill, said that nearly 133 Members of Parliament participated in the discussion, including 56 women MPs, calling it a record in itself.
Shah said there has been no direct opposition to the Women’s Reservation Bill, but alleged that members of the INDI Alliance have opposed it indirectly by raising “ifs and buts” during the debate.
He further stated that those opposing delimitation were, in effect, opposing an increase in seats for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in Parliament and state legislatures.
“Nearly 133 members spoke in the House on this important Constitutional Amendment Bill, out of which 56 were women, which will prove to be a record in itself,” Shah said.
Responding to the debate, the Home Minister reiterated that no party has openly objected to women’s reservation, but claimed that conditional objections were being raised by opposition members.
