Farmers warn of toll-free highways from May 4, announce fresh protests over compensation & power cuts
Ferozepur, April 27, 2026: The Azad Kisan Morcha Punjab (AKM Punjab) has announced a series of major protest actions following a key meeting held today. The farmer body warned the government that if compensation is not released to affected farmers by April 30, all toll plazas across Punjab will be made toll-free indefinitely starting May 4.
Raising further demands, the Morcha stated that farmers whose land is being acquired for the railway line from Mallanwala to Ghariyala station should be compensated at the rate of ₹1.25 crore per acre. Leaders emphasized that the farmers should get the appropriate rate of their land on acquisition.
The Morcha also demanded permission for farmers to remove sand deposited on their fields due to floods, stating that it has rendered large portions of agricultural land unfit for cultivation.
Expressing concern over ongoing power cuts in the state, the organization warned that if the situation does not improve immediately, protests will escalate. A statewide gherao of electricity department XEN offices has been announced for May 10.
In addition, the Morcha condemned the removal of Punjab’s share from the BBMB and demanded its immediate restoration.
Azad Kisan Morcha Punjab (AKM Punjab) Presidium Committee members Satnam Singh Harike, Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia, and Jathedar Tarnjit Singh Nimana asserted that the struggle for farmers’ rights will continue and may intensify if their demands are not met.
