KKU calls May 15 protest to condemn Centre’s decision to remove Punjab’s representation from BBMB
KKU slams Centre’s BBMB decision, Calls for May 15 Protest in Chandigarh
Ferozepur, May 1, 2026: The district committee meeting of the Krantikari Kisan Union (KKU) Punjab was held today at Gurdwara Jamni Sahib, Bajidpur, under the leadership of District Secretary Gurcharan Singh Malsian. Senior state leaders Gurmeet Mehma, State General Secretary, and Avtar Singh Mehma, senior vice-president, also attended the meeting.
Added here, the BBMB, or Bhakra Beas Management Board, is a key inter-state body that oversees the regulation of water and power generated from the Bhakra-Nangal and Beas projects for Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi. Since its creation, Punjab has traditionally played a major role in its functioning because of the state’s geographic and riverine importance. Any change in Punjab’s representation in the board is therefore viewed in the state as a direct concern linked to its rights over river waters, irrigation, and power management. The present controversy has again brought BBMB into the centre of Punjab’s water-sharing politics.
The meeting strongly condemned the Centre’s decision to remove Punjab’s representation from the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). The leaders said the move amounts to a direct attack on Punjab’s rights and an attempt to bring the state’s river waters under central control. They said the issue would be raised through a protest march on May 15, when the Samyukt Kisan Morcha Punjab will assemble at Mohali and march towards the Chandigarh Raj Bhavan.
The farmers’ leaders demanded that the Centre immediately withdraw the notification removing Punjab’s representative from the BBMB and restore Punjab’s representation in the board. They also demanded that complete control of the BBMB be handed over to Punjab.
