Chandigarh, May 1, 2026: On the occasion of International Labour Day, Punjab Labour Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond on Friday tabled a resolution in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha to revise and increase the base rates of minimum wages for workers across the state. The resolution was unanimously passed during a special session of the House held to mark ‘Kirti Divas’ (Labour Day).
The Minister thanked Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for approving a 15% increase in minimum wages, describing it as a major relief for the working class.
Moving the resolution, the Labour Minister said the special session was convened after nearly 69 years on May 1 to honour the contribution of workers, who form the backbone of the state’s economy and development.
He said every development milestone is made possible due to the hard work and sacrifice of labourers.
Highlighting the historical significance of Labour Day, he recalled the 1886 Chicago Haymarket movement, which led to the global demand for an eight-hour workday.
He also referred to Sikh teachings of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, emphasizing “Kirat Karo, Naam Japo, Vand Chhako” as guiding principles that uphold the dignity of labour.
The Minister informed the House that Punjab’s base minimum wage structure was last revised in 2012. While dearness allowance had seen periodic increases, the base wage had remained unchanged for years, prompting the need for revision.
The resolution was unanimously passed, reflecting cross-party support for improving the welfare of labourers in Punjab. It aims to ensure fair compensation and recognition for workers’ contribution to the state’s growth.
Cabinet Ministers Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema and Lal Chand Kataruchak, along with MLAs including Principal Budh Ram, Labh Singh Ugoke, and Sarvjit Kaur Manuke, participated in the discussion.
