:Chandigarh, May 11, 2026: A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to investigate the alleged fake police encounter killing of Sukhdev Singh Sukha, who was reportedly taken on remand from Sangrur Jail by officials of Bagha Purana Police Station in 1990 and later allegedly killed in a staged encounter.
The matter was taken to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2020 through a petition seeking justice in the case.
In March 2026, Justice Jasjit Singh Bedi directed the Punjab Director General of Police to constitute an SIT headed by an officer of ADGP rank to conduct a fair and impartial investigation into the allegations raised in the petition.
Following the High Court directions, the SIT has now been formed under the leadership of Special DGP Amardeep Singh Rai. The team also includes the DIG of Ferozepur Range and the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Ferozepur.
On Monday, Bhawandeep Singh Sidhu met Special DGP Amardeep Singh Rai to seek information regarding the functioning and progress of the SIT investigation.
The case relates to allegations that Sukhdev Singh Sukha was falsely implicated and subsequently killed in a fake police encounter after being brought from Sangrur Jail on police remand in 1990.
