Jalandhar, June 10, 2026: The indefinite strike launched by employees of Punjab Roadways and Punbus was called off on Wednesday following discussions with Punjab Transport Secretary Varun Roojam, bringing relief to thousands of commuters affected by the disruption in bus services across the state.
The agitation, led by the Punjab Roadways, Punbus and PRTC Contract Workers Union (Punjab), had been initiated in opposition to the government's decision to introduce private buses under the kilometre scheme. Union leaders argued that the move could adversely impact the interests of state-run transport services and their workforce.
The strike had significantly disrupted public transport operations in several parts of Punjab, causing inconvenience to daily commuters, students and office-goers. There were also concerns that the protest could intensify further, as contractual drivers and conductors of the Punjab Roadways Transport Corporation (PRTC) were expected to join the agitation.
However, after negotiations between union representatives and Transport Secretary Varun Roojam, both sides reportedly reached an understanding, leading to the withdrawal of the strike.
Union leaders said the decision to suspend the agitation was taken in the interest of the public after receiving assurances from the government regarding their concerns. The details of the discussions were not immediately made public.
