Amritsar (Punjab), June 12, 2026: A suspected sacrilege attempt was thwarted at Gurdwara Shaheed Baba Gurbaksh Singh Ji, located within the Sri Harmandir Sahib complex behind Sri Akal Takht Sahib, after an unidentified man allegedly tried to access sacred weapons displayed inside the shrine.
According to SGPC officials, the incident occurred while Sri Akhand Path Sahib was underway at the gurdwara. The man, believed to be around 35 years old, reportedly entered the shrine, performed parikrama and then suddenly moved towards the sacred weapons kept inside.
Alert sewadars and Sikh volunteers present at the site immediately intervened and overpowered the suspect before handing him over to the police, preventing any untoward incident.
Confirming the development, SGPC Manager Major Singh said a formal complaint has been lodged with the police and strict legal action has been sought against the accused. He described the man's intentions as suspicious and said the swift response of the sewadars helped avert a potentially serious situation.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that the accused is a resident of Uttar Pradesh and was alone at the time of the incident. Police have launched a detailed investigation and are verifying his background and motives.
Meanwhile, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has also initiated its own inquiry to determine whether any larger conspiracy or external influence was involved in the incident.
Authorities have assured that the matter is being investigated thoroughly and security arrangements remain in place at the shrine complex.
