Four-day standoff at Uttarakhand Gurdwara ends peacefully after talks with Nihang Sikh delegation
Rudraprayag (Uttarakhand), June 23, 2026: A four-day-long standoff at a gurdwara in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district ended peacefully on Tuesday after successful negotiations between Nihang Sikh representatives from Punjab, local gurdwara management, and the administration.
The dispute, which had kept police and administrative authorities on high alert since June 20, concluded after Nihang Sikhs stationed on the fourth floor and rooftop of the Nagarasu Gurdwara agreed to come down following multiple rounds of discussions.
Officials said the Nihang Sikhs had remained on the rooftop and upper floors of the gurdwara for several days while talks continued to resolve the issue.02 Security personnel, police teams and administrative officials remained deployed throughout the period to prevent any untoward incident.
The breakthrough came after a delegation of Nihang Sikh representatives from Punjab arrived in Rudraprayag and held discussions with the aggrieved group. Following the intervention, the atmosphere improved and the Nihang Sikhs agreed to end their protest at around 2:30 p.m.
Speaking after the resolution, Giani Gurjeet Singh said the matter was settled through dialogue and the intervention of religious leaders.
He said Baba Harnam Singh Khalsa, head of the Damdami Taksal, had sent a five-member delegation from Punjab to help restore normalcy.
“We held cordial discussions with the administration, which extended full cooperation. We also spoke peacefully with those involved in the dispute, and they have now agreed to return to Punjab without any confrontation,” he said, thanking the Uttarakhand Government and local administration for their support.
Giani Gurpreet Singh confirmed that the dispute had been resolved and that normal religious activities at the gurdwara would continue.
“The matter has been fully settled and the langar service will continue as before,” he said.
Gurdwara Management Welcomes Peaceful Resolution
Baba Beant Singh, granthi of Gurdwara Nagrasu, said respected Sikh religious figures from Punjab played a key role in resolving the issue.
“Everyone sat together, reasoned with the group and brought the situation under control. The individuals were treated respectfully and sent back peacefully. There were no arrests and no physical confrontation,” he said.
Police to Conduct Inquiry
Rudraprayag Superintendent of Police Niharika Tomar said the dispute involved members of the gurdwara management and visiting Nihang Sikh pilgrims.
She said police received information about the matter and immediately reached the site, where it was found that some Nihang Sikh pilgrims had moved to the rooftop and blocked access routes within the premises.
“The administration, police and gurdwara management committee remained in continuous dialogue with them. A delegation from Punjab arrived today and successfully mediated between both sides, leading to a peaceful resolution,” Tomar said.
She added that all Nihang Sikh pilgrims have now come down from the rooftop and authorities are collecting details related to the incident. The police officer further stated that a detailed inquiry has been initiated to ascertain the circumstances that led to the dispute.
“We are examining the nature of the disagreement and the sequence of events. A fair investigation will be conducted, and any necessary action will be taken based on the findings,” she said.
The peaceful resolution of the standoff brought relief to the administration and local residents, ending days of tension around the gurdwara premises without any violence or injuries.
