KKU holds convention against Indo-US Trade Deal and Punjab’s Land Pooling Policy
Ferozepur, July 9, 2026: The Krantikari Kisan Union – KKU - (Punjab) on Thursday organised a farmers' convention at Mehima village in Ferozepur district to protest against the proposed Indo-US Free Trade Agreement and the Punjab Government's new Land Pooling Policy.
Representatives of BKU Mansa, Democratic Teachers' Front, Kisan Students' Union, Misal Sutlej, Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), and the International Panthic Dal also participated in the convention. Speakers expressed concerns over the proposed trade agreement and the land pooling policy, alleging that both measures would adversely affect farmers and agriculture in Punjab.
Addressing the media, farmer leader Avtar Singh Mehma said the convention passed several resolutions demanding the immediate withdrawal of the Indo-US Free Trade Agreement and the Punjab Government's Land Pooling Policy. The convention also sought assured canal water supply to every farm, complete waiver of farmers' and labourers' debts, enactment of a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all crops as recommended by the Swaminathan Commission, withdrawal of the notification removing Punjab's representation from the BBMB, and scrapping of the proposed Electricity Amendment Bill and Seed Bill.
The participants also urged the Central and State Governments to accept all pending demands of farmers.
Following the convention, the farmers staged a protest march and burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump as a mark of protest.
Avtar Singh Mehma further announced that, following the call of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), toll plazas across Punjab would be made toll-free on July 22. He also informed that a national convention would be held at TalKatora Stadium, New Delhi, on July 29 and 30, while another convention dedicated to the martyrdom of Shaheed Udham Singh would be organised on July 31.
Among those who addressed the gathering were Gurmeet Singh Mehima, Dalwinder Singh Sherkhan, Major Singh Randhawa, Gurcharan Singh Komal, Jagrup Singh Bhullar, Man Singh Kili, Boota Singh Kari Kalan, Baba Satnam Singh Vallian, Sarabjit Singh Bhawra, Malkit Singh Haraj, and Gurdev Singh Markhai, besides several other farmer leaders.
