Ferozepur Municipal Council to elect President on July 16; High Court orders entire proceedings to be videographed
Ferozepur, July 15: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has paved the way for the constitution of the newly elected Municipal Council, Ferozepur, by directing that the meeting for administering the oath of allegiance to the newly elected councillors and conducting the election of the President and Vice-President(s) be held on July 16, 2026, at 3:00 p.m.
The directions came while disposing of Civil Writ Petition (CWP) No. 20224 of 2026, filed by Ashok Kumar and others, who had sought a direction to the Punjab Government to convene the first meeting of the newly elected Municipal Council so that the oath-taking ceremony and elections to the posts of President and Vice-President(s) could be conducted.
During the hearing, the State Government informed the Division Bench of Justice Deepak Sibal and Justice Rupinderjit Chahal that, in accordance with Rule 3 of the Punjab Municipal (President and Vice-President) Election Rules, 1994, the meeting would be convened on July 16 at 3:00 p.m. The State further assured the court that the entire proceedings would be videographed, with the recording to be preserved in the custody of the Deputy Commissioner, Ferozepur, for a period of three months.
The court's order clears the legal hurdle for the formation of the new Municipal Council leadership in Ferozepur, with the election of the President and Vice-President(s) now scheduled to take place on July 16.
The final results of the Municipal Council were – Congress 18, BJP 7, AAP 5, BSP 1, and Independent 2. The election to the office of the President of the Ferozepur Municipal Council has assumed political significance as the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is reportedly making efforts to secure the support of independent councillors to form the council leadership. While AAP leaders have expressed confidence of electing their nominee, opposition parties particularly the Congress, have also staked claim to the post, asserting that they enjoy the backing of a majority of the newly elected councillors. The outcome of the election is expected to determine which party assumes control of the civic body.
Addressing a press conference at the Press Club, Ferozepur, former Congress MLA Parminder Singh Pinki said that the election to the post of President of the Ferozepur Municipal Council will be held on Wednesday under the supervision of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He said the High Court has appointed senior advocate Nikhil Goyal as the Observer to oversee the election process. Pinki further stated that the entire proceedings, including the polling and counting process, will be videographed to ensure complete transparency and fairness in the election. He expressed confidence that the democratic process would be conducted in a free and impartial manner.
