Hyderabad, July 20, 2026: A trainee Indian Police Service (IPS) officer accused of sexually harassing a fellow trainee at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) allegedly attempted suicide in Hyderabad on Monday, two days after an FIR was registered against him.
The accused, Uday Krishna Reddy, allegedly tried to end his life at his brother's residence in Moti Nagar. Family members noticed his condition and immediately shifted him to a private hospital in SR Nagar. He is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Erragadda, and police said his condition is stable.
The Attapur police had registered a case against Reddy on July 18 based on a complaint lodged by a woman IPS trainee at the academy.
According to the FIR, the complainant accused Reddy of sexual harassment, physical assault, criminal intimidation, stalking and blackmail. Police invoked multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections related to sexual harassment, assault, criminal intimidation, stalking and outraging the modesty of a woman. Sections 66E and 67A of the Information Technology Act, dealing with privacy violations and electronic transmission of sexually explicit material, have also been invoked.
According to the complaint, the alleged harassment began around June 23, when Reddy allegedly sent sexually explicit and abusive messages to the complainant on WhatsApp and made sexist remarks about her in the presence of fellow trainees.
The woman officer further alleged that the accused repeatedly spread false claims about her personal life, pressured her to admit to an alleged relationship with another trainee officer and used derogatory language against her.
She also alleged that Reddy forcibly took her mobile phone, compelled her to reveal its password and accessed her private messages without her consent.
The complaint further states that the alleged abuse escalated on the night of July 9, when Reddy allegedly confined her to his room, pulled her by the hair, attempted to strangle her and threatened her with a knife. He is also accused of preventing her from leaving the room and throwing packets of condoms at her.
The complainant alleged that she was assaulted again the following morning. She further accused the trainee officer of groping her, attempting to touch her inappropriately, secretly recording a private video without her knowledge and sending it to her husband.
In her complaint, she also alleged that Reddy circulated false information about her within the National Police Academy in an attempt to damage her reputation.
Police are investigating both the criminal case registered against the trainee officer and the circumstances surrounding the alleged suicide attempt. The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy has not yet issued an official statement on the matter.
