Orange alert for Punjab, Chandigarh as IMD forecasts heavy rain for three days

Chandigarh, July 24, 2026: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an intensification of the monsoon over Punjab and Chandigarh, issuing an orange alert for July 27 to 29 with a warning of heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds.
The weather department has cautioned that intense showers during the three-day period could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas and disrupt normal life in several parts of the region.
Over the past 24 hours, light to moderate rainfall was recorded across many districts of Punjab. Amritsar received the highest rainfall at 83.5 mm, followed by Gurdaspur (33.5 mm), Abohar in Fazilka (33 mm), KVK Pathankot (18 mm), Saleran in Hoshiarpur (17 mm) and Faridkot (16 mm).
Chandigarh recorded 2.7 mm of rainfall during the same period. The city registered a maximum temperature of 34.7°C and a minimum temperature of 24.8°C.
According to the IMD, Punjab’s average maximum temperature dipped by 0.2°C compared to the previous day, remaining close to the seasonal normal. Bathinda Airport recorded the state’s highest maximum temperature at 36.6°C.
Authorities have advised residents to remain alert, avoid waterlogged areas during heavy showers, and follow weather advisories as the monsoon is expected to strengthen over the coming days.
