Chandigarh, July 29, 2026: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Wednesday accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of misleading Punjabis by claiming that municipal sanitation workers had called off their strike, alleging that the protest was still continuing in several parts of the state.
In a statement, SAD senior leader Dr Daljit Singh Cheema said the government had failed to fulfil the promises made to sanitation workers ahead of the municipal elections, causing inconvenience to residents.
Cheema said he had sought feedback from Anandpur Sahib, the constituency of Local Government Minister Harjot Singh Bains, as well as Nangal and Ropar, and was informed that sanitation workers were still on strike.
“The government should fulfil the promises made to the safai sewaks in the run-up to the municipal elections and refrain from using force to suppress their protest, as was witnessed in Barnala recently,” he said.
The SAD leader also demanded that a case be registered against the police personnel allegedly involved in the lathi-charge on women sanitation workers in Barnala.
Cheema further expressed solidarity with Mohalla Clinic staff who are demanding the regularisation of their services.
