SGPC urges Centre to reconsider decision on reopening Kartarpur corridor
Dhami says prolonged closure has hurt Sikh sentiments; calls for security arrangements to allow pilgrims to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib

Amritsar (Punjab), August 1, 2026: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has urged the Centre to reconsider its decision not to reopen the Kartarpur Corridor for the time being, saying the matter is closely linked to the religious sentiments and faith of Sikhs across the world.
Dhami’s statement came in response to an answer given in Parliament by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh regarding the continued closure of the corridor connecting India with Gurdwara Sri Darbar Sahib, Kartarpur, in Pakistan.
The SGPC president said the Centre should review the matter at the earliest and take a decision keeping Sikh sentiments in mind.
“Gurdwara Sri Darbar Sahib, Kartarpur, is a sacred place where Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji spent the final years of his life and gave humanity the message of Kirat Karo, Naam Japo and Vand Chhako,” Dhami said.
He said paying obeisance at the historic shrine was a long-standing prayer and a matter of deep religious faith for Sikhs across the world.“The prolonged closure of the Kartarpur Corridor has deeply hurt the religious sentiments of the Sikh community,” he said.

Dhami said the corridor was also a symbol of peace between the people of India and Pakistan and should be viewed in the context of its religious and humanitarian significance.
While acknowledging that national security was the responsibility of every government, the SGPC president said security concerns should be addressed through effective arrangements without overlooking the religious freedom and sentiments of Sikh devotees.
He urged the Centre to make necessary security arrangements, conduct an early review of the situation and take a decision to reopen the corridor so that Sikh pilgrims can once again visit Gurdwara Sri Darbar Sahib, Kartarpur.
