Barnala (Punjab), August 2, 2026: Supporters of former Punjab Chief Minister and sitting MP Charanjit Singh Channi raised slogans in his support during a Congress meeting in Barnala, marking the second consecutive day that such sloganeering was witnessed at a party gathering.
Punjab Congress in-charge Bhupesh Baghel and Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring were in Barnala to meet party workers and office-bearers as part of an outreach exercise aimed at strengthening the party organisation.
During the meeting, a group of Channi supporters raised slogans including “Charanjit Singh Channi Zindabad” and “Punjab Bachao, Channi Lao”. The slogan roughly translates to “Save Punjab, Bring Channi Back.”
The slogans were raised in the presence of Baghel and Warring, drawing attention to the continuing display of support for the former Chief Minister at Congress meetings in different parts of Punjab.
Channi was not present at the meeting. However, his supporters have been attending the party’s district-level gatherings in significant numbers and publicly expressing their support for his leadership.
The supporters said they believed Channi’s leadership would be important in strengthening the Congress in Punjab.
Responding to the sloganeering, Warring appealed to party workers to remain calm and maintain discipline. He said every party worker had the right to express their views but stressed that organisational discipline was equally important.
Similar scenes were witnessed at Congress meetings in Patiala and Sangrur, where Channi supporters also raised slogans in his favour in the presence of Baghel and Warring.
With similar displays of support now reported at party meetings in three districts, the incidents have drawn attention to differences among sections of the Punjab Congress leadership and workers.
While Baghel and Warring are undertaking district-level meetings to strengthen the party organisation and engage with workers, the repeated sloganeering has added a new dimension to the party’s ongoing outreach exercise.
