Himachal: Kullu closes all schools, colleges over heavy rain, landslide risk

Kullu (Himachal Pradesh), August 11, 2026: In view of an Orange Alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for heavy to very heavy rainfall and the risk of flash floods and landslides, the Kullu administration has ordered the closure of educational institutions across Kullu Sub-Division on Tuesday.
According to an office order issued by Dr. Jaibanti, H.A.S., Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Kullu, the decision has been taken under Section 34 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, keeping in view the safety and security of students and staff.
The order states that it has been raining across almost the entire Kullu Sub-Division since August 10, with incidents of landslides being reported from various areas. Blockages on several roads have also been reported by field departments.
The administration noted that students attending schools, colleges and other educational institutions were facing difficulties due to the inclement weather.
As per the order, all educational institutions under the jurisdiction of Kullu Sub-Division will remain closed on August 11 with immediate effect.
The closure applies to schools, Anganwadi centres, colleges, ITIs, polytechnic institutes, engineering colleges and pharmacy colleges. However, the order makes an exception for ongoing board examinations of all classes, which will continue as scheduled.
All concerned authorities have been directed to take adequate measures to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff.
Copies of the order have been forwarded to the District Magistrate, Superintendent of Police, Child Development Project Officer, education authorities, principals of government and private educational institutions, DIET, polytechnic institutes and ITIs for necessary action and publicity.
