Minister Harpal Cheema lays foundation stone of Rs 2 crore BDPO office in Chhajli
New BDPO Office to Bring Rural Administration Closer to People, Ease Access to Government Services: Harpal Singh Cheema

Sangrur (Punjab), September 7, 2026: Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema today laid the foundation stone of a new building for the Block Development and Panchayat Office (BDPO) at Chhajli, to be constructed at a cost of around ₹2 crore.
He also formally commenced the construction work by performing the traditional Takk ceremony. He said the new office would bring rural administration closer to the people and provide further impetus to development in the area.
Congratulating the residents, Panchayat Samiti members, chairpersons, vice-chairpersons, and panches and sarpanches of the area, Harpal Singh Cheema said that Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann had approved the new block a few months ago. He said the establishment of the new BDPO office would eliminate the need for Panchayats to travel to distant block offices for routine work and would make administrative services more accessible at the local level.
The Finance Minister said the 6,600-square-foot building has been targeted for completion within six months. The new facility will provide modern amenities, including a reception area, Chairman’s Room, BDPO Room, Staff Hall, Meeting Hall, Record Room, Waiting Area, NREGA Staff Room and toilets.
S. Cheema said the government’s development vision extends beyond the construction of infrastructure and focuses on saving people’s time, improving access to administration and expanding essential facilities in rural areas. He said Chhajli and its adjoining areas were witnessing development across multiple sectors, including roads, playgrounds and stadiums, astroturf facilities, Schools of Eminence and healthcare infrastructure.
He further said that providing quality sports facilities to the youth and channelising their energy towards constructive activities remained a key priority of the government.
The Finance Minister said concerted efforts were also being made to take canal water to agricultural fields at a faster pace, with the objective of reducing dependence on groundwater and conserving this precious resource for future generations.
