Big Breaking: SC orders Raj Jit Singh to surrender

The Supreme Court has directed dismissed Punjab Police Service (PPS) officer Raj Jit Singh Hundal to surrender before the concerned authorities ahead of the next hearing of his case on October 1, 2026.
A bench comprising Justice M.M. Sundresh and Justice Augustine George Masih was hearing Hundal’s Special Leave Petition (Criminal) No. 15843/2026, challenging a July 2026 order of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
During the hearing, Senior Advocate Amit Rawal, appearing for Hundal, informed the Supreme Court that his client was willing to surrender voluntarily. Taking note of the submission, the apex court adjourned the matter to facilitate his surrender. Hundal may file an appropriate application seeking regular bail after complying with the court’s direction.
Background of the Case
Raj Jit Singh Hundal, a former Punjab Police Service officer who served as an Assistant Inspector General (AIG) and Moga Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), was dismissed from service by the Punjab Government in April 2023 after the Punjab and Haryana High Court opened reports of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing an alleged police-drug nexus.
The SIT had examined Hundal’s alleged links with former police inspector Inderjeet Singh, who was arrested in 2017 in a narcotics case involving alleged links with drug traffickers and the recovery of narcotics and illegal arms. The SIT reports were submitted to the High Court in sealed covers.
In its subsequent proceedings, the High Court recorded allegations concerning Hundal’s alleged complicity with Inderjeet Singh and alleged misuse of official position, including claims relating to the framing of cases and extortion. The court also noted that the SIT had not exonerated Hundal.
The Punjab Government dismissed Hundal from service on April 17, 2023, invoking Article 311(2)(b) of the Constitution and Rule 13 of the Punjab Civil Services (Punishment and Appeal) Rules, 1970. The government also directed that he be nominated as an accused in the relevant narcotics case.
The High Court later recorded that Hundal had been nominated as an accused in an FIR involving provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Indian Penal Code, including provisions relating to conspiracy. It also noted a separate Prevention of Corruption Act case concerning allegations of disproportionate assets.
Hundal's anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in August 2023. In its order, the court referred to the seriousness of the allegations and the SIT findings while declining him anticipatory bail.
The matter has since continued through various legal proceedings, culminating in the present Special Leave Petition before the Supreme Court. With Hundal's counsel now offering voluntary surrender, the Supreme Court has fixed October 1 for the next hearing.
