LPU Violence: Internet shut down, classes suspended for 10 days

Phagwara (Punjab), September 28, 2026: Internet services have been suspended in the wake of violent protests at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara, while the university has suspended regular classes for 10 days from September 28 and postponed its mid-term examinations until further notice.
The internet shutdown has been ordered amid concerns that provocative or inflammatory videos circulating online could further affect the situation following the campus violence.
The protests erupted over social media claims concerning the alleged sexual assault of a female student on the university campus. The university has denied the allegation, describing the claims as false and unverified. Police have registered an FIR and constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the matter.
The protests later turned violent, with students clashing with police, blocking NH-44 and damaging property and vehicles.
Meanwhile, the Punjab State Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter and sought details from the Kapurthala Deputy Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police. The Commission has sought the FIR, details of the SIT and the progress of the investigation, besides information on security arrangements at the university's women's hostels.
The Commission has also directed authorities to ensure the safety and privacy of the student complainant during the investigation.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has taken cognizance of the situation and directed strict action against those responsible for the violence. On his instructions, Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav visited the university to assess the situation.
LPU has advised students who wish to travel home during the 10-day suspension to do so in consultation with their parents or guardians. Those staying on campus have been asked to remain inside their hostels or places of residence and avoid unnecessary movement or involvement in activities linked to the unrest.
