Horticulture Dept urges farmers to buy fruit plants only from registered nurseries
Ferozepur, October 19, 2026: Deputy Director Horticulture Dr Balkar Singh has urged farmers in Ferozepur district to purchase fruit plants only from department-recognised or licensed nurseries and ensure compliance with the Fruit Nurseries Act and the rules framed under it.
Dr Balkar Singh said that farmers planning to establish orchards should procure mango, guava, kinnow, litchi, ber and other fruit plants only from authorised nurseries to ensure quality and varietal purity.
He emphasised that healthy, disease-free and good-quality plants were essential for the success of an orchard. Purchasing substandard or incorrectly labelled plants could cause substantial financial losses to farmers and result in lower-than-expected production.
The Deputy Director advised farmers to verify the nursery’s valid licence and check the variety, authenticity, age and quality of fruit plants before making a purchase. He also stressed the importance of obtaining a proper bill or receipt for every transaction.
Farmers who come across nurseries supplying substandard or incorrect varieties of plants, or violating prescribed rules, can approach the office of the concerned District Horticulture Officer to lodge a complaint.
Dr Balkar Singh further advised farmers to consult horticulture department officials before establishing an orchard. He said soil and water testing, availability of irrigation water and the suitability of fruit varieties to local conditions should be carefully assessed before selecting plants.
He said that scientific planning and the selection of suitable, quality planting material could help farmers establish productive orchards, increase their income and make horticulture a more profitable agricultural venture.
