Chandigarh, November 6, 2026: Former Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Bibi Jagir Kaur has indicated the possibility of returning to the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), led by Sukhbir Singh Badal, while strongly advocating an alliance between the Akali Dal and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
In an interview with a social media channel, Bibi Jagir Kaur said the mission with which they had launched the ‘Punar Surjit Akali Dal’ (Rejuvenated Akali Dal) could not be accomplished.
She said there was now a widespread realisation that the 106-year-old mother party needed to be strengthened. She also pointed out that they had not even been able to get the Punar Surjit Akali Dal registered.
Responding to questions about a possible return to the SAD, she said that differences could potentially be resolved when she sat down for a dialogue with Sukhbir Singh Badal.
She maintained that she had never personally left the Akali Dal.
On the questions that could arise over the purpose of forming the Punar Surjit Akali Dal if they eventually returned to the main party, she said people might ask why the separate initiative had been launched in the first place. However, she added that these questions would be answered when the time came.
Bibi Jagir Kaur said their immediate objective was to strengthen their parent party, the Akali Dal. She observed that keeping their distance from the party could prevent differences from being resolved.
Strongly advocating an alliance with the BJP, she recalled that former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal used to assign duties to six or seven officers to secure funds from the Centre under various schemes.
She argued that an alliance could help form a strong government, making a case for renewed political cooperation between the two parties.
