Villagers halt demolition of Gurudwara Sahib in Tarn Taran for highway construction

Tarn Taran (Punjab), May 13, 2025: Tension flared in village Kang, Tarn Taran, as locals fiercely opposed an attempt by the administration to demolish a 25–30-year-old Gurdwara Sahib for the construction of the Katra Express Highway. The situation escalated when the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee joined the protest, standing firmly with the villagers.
The administration had marked the Gurdwara Sahib structure for removal, claiming it falls within the land designated for the new national highway. However, villagers refused to allow the demolition, insisting that land for the road should be taken from those who have already accepted compensation.
Farmers and labor leaders called the demolition move illegal and unjustified, stressing that while villagers are open to finding a solution, the destruction of the Gurdwara Sahib is non-negotiable.
The rising protest forced the administration to temporarily suspend demolition operations. SHO of Sri Goindwal Sahib Police Station, Inspector Prabhjit Singh, acknowledged the situation, stating, “Though the Gurdwara lies on the proposed highway route, we have paused action and will consult with villagers for a resolution.”
Legal experts note that religious sites are protected under multiple laws, and sensitive handling is required when such structures intersect with infrastructure projects.Across India, governments are frequently urged to respect religious sentiments, especially concerning the demolition of places of worship.
The future of the Gurdwara Sahib now hinges on a peaceful resolution, balancing infrastructure needs with the deep-rooted faith and traditions of the local community.
