Attempt to Bury Truth in Lawrence Bishnoi Custody Interview Case is a Direct Assault on Rule of Law and Judicial Accountability in Punjab: Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal Bhukhri Kalan
Ludhiana, 26 March 2026: National Bharatiya Janata Party leader, Advocate Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal Bhukhri Kalan issued a sharp and uncompromising statement strongly condemning what he termed a calculated attempt by the Punjab Government to suppress truth and accountability in the highly controversial matter concerning gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s interview while in police custody.
Grewal wrote on his social media platform X that developments surrounding the abrupt move to shut down the petition immediately after the retirement of Hon’ble Justice Anupinder Singh Grewal represent nothing short of a disgraceful assault on transparency, rule of law and constitutional accountability in the State of Punjab.
He said that the Aam Aadmi Party-led Government of Punjab under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has shamelessly attempted to bury a matter of grave public importance. The suspicious timing of this move reeks of blatant opportunism and raises extremely serious and disturbing legal questions about what exactly the government is trying to conceal from the people of Punjab. Such conduct prima facie indicates mala fide intent and reflects a deliberate attempt to obstruct judicial scrutiny and derail the course of justice.
Grewal told that Hon’ble Justice Anupinder Singh Grewal demonstrated rare courage, integrity and judicial independence by bringing to light the deeply suspicious and questionable circumstances under which notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi was allowed to give a media interview while being lodged in Punjab Police custody. Instead of facilitating a fair, transparent and court-monitored investigation into this shocking breach of custodial discipline and legal procedure, the Punjab Government now appears to be engaged in a crude and desperate exercise to suppress the truth and shield those responsible.
Grewal further said that such actions amount to a blatant abuse of executive authority and a brazen attempt to sabotage institutional accountability. This is not governance in any civilised democracy. This is nothing but an apparent cover-up, carried out with alarming haste and complete disregard for public trust and constitutional morality.
Grewal strongly urged the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, the Hon’ble Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court at Chandigarh, the Supreme Court Observer, and respected legal institutions including Live Law, Bar and Bench, as well as the President and office bearers of the Punjab and Haryana Bar Council to immediately take suo motu cognizance of this extremely serious matter in the interest of justice, transparency and public confidence in the rule of law.
He said that the nation must know under whose authority a hardened gangster was permitted to conduct a widely circulated interview from police custody, and who within the administrative and policing hierarchy facilitated or permitted such an outrageous breach of custodial protocol.
Grewal further called upon the Hon’ble Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah and the Hon’ble Union Minister for Law and Justice Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal to take decisive cognizance of the issue and ensure that a fair, impartial and independent investigation is initiated so that the truth cannot be buried under political pressure or administrative manipulation.
Addressing the Director General of punjab Police, Grewal said that the people of Punjab deserve genuine law and order, not political manipulation, institutional compromise and suppression of facts. If the present government truly has nothing to hide, then there can be absolutely no justification for this desperate and suspicious haste to shut down the matter.
Grewal that the people of Punjab are vigilant and politically aware. They are carefully watching these developments, and they will not be deceived by such crude and desperate attempts to silence accountability, obstruct justice and protect those who may be responsible for this shocking and unprecedented episode.
