India sees rise in infertility to 15–20%; early diagnosis and non-IVF treatments gaining traction: Birla Fertility & IVF specialist

Chandigarh, September 18, 2025:
India’s infertility rate has climbed to an estimated 15–20%, up from the earlier 10–12%, a trend attributed to modern lifestyles, delayed parenthood, environmental stressors, and greater public awareness of reproductive health, according to inputs shared during a media interaction.
Couples are seeking specialist consultation much earlier—typically within 6–12 months of trying to conceive—marking a shift from past patterns of waiting years before medical evaluation, said Dr Rakhi Goyal, fertility expert at Birla Fertility & IVF, Chandigarh.
Early diagnosis significantly improves outcomes, with foundational tests such as semen analysis for men and ultrasound, hormonal profiling like AMH, and tubal assessments (HSG or sonosalpingography) for women helping pinpoint causes with accuracy, the expert noted.
Contrary to common belief, IVF is not the first or only line of treatment, as many cases respond to lifestyle modification, ovulation induction, or simpler procedures like IUI.
PCOS remains a leading contributor to female infertility but often improves with targeted diet and exercise; even about a 5% reduction in body weight can restore hormonal balance and support natural ovulation, the specialist added.
Overall, growing awareness and earlier intervention are driving a more holistic and personalized fertility‑care approach in India, empowering couples to take timely steps toward parenthood
