NHM Employees’ strike continues over demands
Ferozepur, August 17, 2026: Health services have been affected due to the ongoing strike by employees working under the National Health Mission (NHM), who are protesting against the Punjab government over their long-pending demands. The NHM Employees Union Punjab has announced a strike from August 17 to 24 and has urged the government to take immediate steps to resolve their issues.
Union committee member Bagich Singh said that NHM employees recruited through a proper selection process have been working on contractual basis for the past 15-20 years. He alleged that despite repeated assurances by the Punjab government, no concrete decision has been taken regarding their demands. He said nearly 40-45 meetings had been held with the government during the past four-and-a-half years, but the meetings had failed to produce a satisfactory solution.
The union’s major demands include equal pay for equal work, gratuity and an increase in the upper age limit, among others. Bagich Singh said the employees were compelled to go on strike to safeguard their future and ensure their legitimate rights. During the protest, NHM employees raised slogans against the government and demanded immediate action on their demands.
Union leaders Preet Makhija, Community Health Officer, and Harjinder Singh, district committee member, said that if the government failed to resolve their demands at the earliest, the union would intensify its agitation and stage protests against the government at various levels. They also warned that the Punjab Finance Minister would be gheraoed if their demands were not addressed soon.
Speaking to the media, Sukhdev Raj (DSA), Dr Yuvraj Narang (Epidemiologist), Ajay Kumar (IA), Gurbachan Singh (CHO), Jyoti Chhabra (BSA), Dr Amandeep (AMO, RBSK) and Prabhjot Kaur (Staff Nurse) jointly demanded that the government and the Health Department issue the necessary notification accepting their legitimate demands without further delay.
The employees warned that if the government again adopted a policy of delaying the matter, they would be forced to go on an indefinite strike. The union leaders said the responsibility for any disruption in health services during the agitation would rest with the state government and the Health Department.
Seema Rani, Ravi Chopra, Sumeet Kumar, Mukesh Kumar, Simranpreet Kaur, Harmanpreet Kaur, Jaspal Sharma, Rinku Kamboj, Amarinder Singh and other NHM employees were also present during the protest.
